Various Career Paths for Nurses
When most people think of nurses, they think of someone who didn't become a doctor. While it's true that nurses can begin working before doctors, that doesn't mean they don't work as hard or have to learn as much as doctors. From a CNA to an entry level LPN to a fully licensed RN or a specialist nurse that deals with pregnancies, there are many paths you can take. Here are just a few examples.
- CNA - A certified nursing assistant is where you will begin your nursing journey. This entry level position required certification that needs to be renewed periodically.
- LPN - Licensed practical nurses are in high demand. This entry level nursing position is a wonderful way to get paid for doing something you love while you decide if you want to specialize or continue studying to become a full RN. There is schooling that is needed, as well as getting your state license.
- RN - A registered nurse is one who has had practical experience as a nurse as well as advanced education in a classroom. While it is a difficult road to travel, many women travel this traditional route when pursuing a career as a nurse.
- Nurse Specializations - Beyond the education and experience needed to become an RN (a bachelor's degree and practical experience) further classroom training and on the job experience is needed if you want to go into a specialization. There are many options for you, depending on what type of hospital and health work you enjoy.
- Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) - From hospital nursing administration to help with staff training, this is a popular goal for people who like working in an office setting in a hospital.
- Nurse Practitioner (NP) - From research to practical primary care in the community, a NP is a specialization for those who like working with people.
- Nurse Midwife (CNM) - A certified nurse midwife specializes in pregnancies and giving birth. If you enjoy the miracle of childbirth, this is a good specialization to go into.
There are other specializations for nurses to go into as well. If you are ready to begin your nursing career or already have your CNA, getting licensed as a practical nurse is the first step of a wonderful career. From there you can enjoy your career as a nurse while you move forward toward being a RN or go into a specialization. Whatever you decide, this is a hot career path to follow.
